What are Values?

Values are the things in life that are important to us and give us purpose. Values come from our life experiences and are influenced by various factors such as family, school, friends, economic circumstances, religious circumstances, the media and many others. Values can be context dependant; we all create maps of the world depending on many factors including our values.

We make choices and create our views of the world guided by many factors through which we filter external events and create our own representation of them. These factors include:

Language

Values

Beliefs

Attitudes and experiences

Values play a part in motivation; in some situations we are motivated by moving towards something we want and in others we are motivated by moving away from something we don’t want.

Discovering your Values

Values can be discovered by spending time thinking about what is important to us in life. The exercise below guides you in thinking about your values; the questions are from a set created by Reg Connelly of Pegasus NLP.

NLP – Discovering your Values

Finding Values

1. If you had all the money, all the time and all the freedom in the world what would you be doing with your life right now?

2. Think of three people that you know from real life that are living a happy and fulfilling life.

3. Think of five great moments in your life.

Come up with a list of what you value from these questions

To assist with finding your values consider the following:

Think of what is important and why it is important

You may start with good feelings and then chunk up to concepts.

Your values may involve both a move towards an objective as well as moving away from an issue/matter.

Hierarchy

Place the values into a hierarchy of importance to you:

If you could have just one of your values guaranteed, which one would it be?

If the first one was guaranteed and you could have one more, which would it be?

Continue until 5 values have been identified.

Fulfilling your values

When you have your values think of all the different ways in which you can fulfil them e.g. if success is a value how many different ways are there for you to consider that you have achieved success?

 winning a game of tennis

 achieving targets

 when cooked a meal

Future Vision - Back Track

Associate with your ideal day in say, 5 or 10 years time:  Where are you? What are you doing?

Be very clear how your values are being fulfilled in this scenario.

Back track through your timeline to now – 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 year, then 6, 3, 1 month, then 2 weeks, 1 week, tomorrow.

Action Plan

Identify some initial milestones along the route to your vision.

Create an action plan of practical steps you can take to reach your first milestone

Future Vision

Create a vision for a fulfilling life by considering what your ideal day will look like in 3 – 5 years’ time.

Where are you?

What are you doing?

Complete the back track exercise given below to define an action plan for achieving your goals and living by your values.

Key Learning Points

Values are those things in life which are important to us and guide us in our behaviour and the maps we create of the world. A Fulfilling life is one led in accordance with our values, so take time out regularly to identify your values and consider how you are fulfilling them.
